Saudi Aramco is finalising plans to develop Saudi Arabia’s biggest gas plant, which would process all offshore non-associated dry gas to meet escalating demand.
Saudi Aramco chief executive Khalid al-Falih told Reuters that the new Wasit plant would process over 1.8 billion cubic feet of gas a day.
“This plant [Wasit] will be the biggest gas plant we have ever built … and this will go a long way to meet rising demand for utilities and some industries,” he said.
The Wasit gas plant at Moneefa involves gas processing units, one tie-in platform, two offshore gas platforms, subsea power, communication links and pipelines.
Engineering and design work as well as project management services for the project would be provided by Canada-based SNC-Lavalin, according to Reuters.
Saudi Arabia’s petrochemical sector will not use the gas plant’s supplies as feedstock.
“It will not have any NGL [natural gas liquids] … it will not address any petrochemical production needed for olefins,” Falih said.
Saudi Aramco also intends to commence drilling in deeper offshore areas in 2012, Falih said.
