Shell has won a bid to explore the Orange Basin deepwater area near South Africa’s west coast, the South African Petroleum Authorities have announced.
The exploration area is spread across 37,000km², located in water between 500m and 4,000m deep that has seen limited exploration to date.
Shell executive vice-president international exploration Ceri Powell said that the Orange Basin was a big frontier exploration opportunity.
This is the first time Shell will conduct oil and gas exploration work in South Africa.
