ONGC inaugurates maiden 51 MW wind project in Gujarat

Pune: Suzlon Energy Limited - the world’s fifth largest wind turbine maker with 10.5% of global market share, and the leading wind power company in India with over 50% market share*, announced the completion of its 51 MW wind power project for the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) of India.
The project located at Motisindholi (Jakhau) in the Kutch district of Gujarat features 34 units of Suzlon’s S82 – 1.5 MW turbines and will provide captive generation capacity for ONGC, powering centers at Anklesvar, Ahmedabad, Mehasana and Vadodara.

To mark the successful completion, the project was formally inaugurated by Mr R.S. Sharma, CMD – ONGC; and was attended by other senior dignitaries from ONGC and Suzlon. Mr. S.K. Negi, Managing Director – Gujarat Electricity Transmission Company (GETCO), was also present at the function.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rohit Modi – President, India Business - Suzlon Energy Limited, stated: “This is a very important step for ONGC – one of the world’s leading corporations in oil & gas. This investment is a clear validation of the importance of wind and renewable energy in powering the world of tomorrow.
Speaking at the occasion, Mr. R.S. Sharma, CMD – ONGC, congratulated Suzlon team for the timely completion of ONGC’s pilot foray into wind energy. He stated that with ONGC becoming an Integrated Energy Producer, the company is looking for more investments in the fast growing renewable energy sector, and would look for continued association with Suzlon.

With per capita levels of power consumption in the country a mere third, compared to the developed world there is vast potential for renewable energy to bridge the gap, Mr. R.S. Sharma noted.

This initiative is a clear signal of the importance of wind energy, and it’s acceptance as a commercially viable and eco-friendly source of power.”
Gujarat is one of the leading adopters of wind power in the country, with over 1,300 MW of wind power generating capacity installed, of which Suzlon alone has supplied over 700 MW. Other leading corporations which have invested in building wind power capacity at the Kutch wind farm site include DLF, Gujarat NRE Coke, GSFC, GNFC, GSEC, GACL and Energy Infra.
