Rome, 10 June 2008 – Once again this year, in expectation of the summer peak in electricity consumption, Eni will be taking its tie off. Introduced in 2007, the initiative aims to save energy by encouraging employees to adopt a less formal workplace dress code to reduce power consumption and work more comfortably.
In 2007 the “Eni takes its tie off‘ scheme allowed the company to keep office temperatures one degree Centigrade higher than the usual summertime levels and ensure a more rational use of air conditioning. Although employees were expected to adopt appropriate office dress, they were able to opt for cooler, lighter clothes and not bother with a tie except on formal occasions. The scheme proved extremely successful. While office temperatures were approximately 1°C higher, the company achieved a saving of 243,000 kWh of electricity, equivalent to a 9% reduction in energy consumption for air-conditioning systems. It also cut CO2 emissions by approximately 141 metric tonnes, similar to the emissions decrease that would have been achieved over the same period if 525 employees had used public transport rather than their own cars to travel into work. The economic savings from the “Eni takes its tie off‘ initiative was invested in sustainability projects.
The scheme, which will start in the next weeks, is a demonstration of of Eni’s commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability, which also underpins its 30PERCENTO Campaign to raise Italian consumer awareness of the need to rationalize energy use.
Encouraging employees to take their tie off in the office is a metaphor to tackle a pressing issue. In breaking with protocol and suggesting that people relinquish a sartorial accessory regarded as a symbol of Italian elegance, Eni aims to prick consciences and encourage debate on excessive energy consumption caused by immoderate use of air conditioning in the summer months. The Eni no-tie dress code attracted wide national and international media coverage last year, spurring other business corporations, the political community and individuals to follow its example.
