London, United Kingdom (6 May 2008) - AMEC Chief Executive Samir Brikho has been appointed chair of a new strategy board tasked with demonstrating the UK’s world-leading position in energy and keeping it ahead of international competition. The announcement was made by Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), Houston.
Mr Brikho will chair the UK Energy Marketing Strategy Implementation Board, responsible for developing and implementing a new strategy for this important and growing sector of the economy. The strategy was launched by UK Trade & Investment last December. Other members of the Board are currently being recruited.
Owned and led by business leaders, the strategy examines global energy challenges, looking forward to 2030 as global demand for energy grows. It sets out new ways to promote UK expertise to an international audience.
UK energy companies already generate revenues of more than £90 billion from domestic and international business and employ 600,000 people. These statistics are expected to rise to a staggering £200 billion and one million employees by 2030. By this date it is also estimated that more than £10 trillion a year will be spent supplying energy, with demand expected to rise by over 50% globally.
Mr Brikho and the wider board will be tasked with creating a working partnership between UK energy companies and government to develop real solutions to some of the global challenges arising from climate change.
Energy Minister, Malcolm Wicks, commented:
“As energy supply and the issue of climate change rise up the global agenda, the UK is well positioned to build and capitalise on the strength of its energy industry. Positioning the UK as a worldwide hub for energy technology development and application is an absolute priority of this strategy. By taking the strategy forward, we believe the board can offer the UK’s energy sector the loudest possible voice on the world stage and ensure we are leading the way as energy innovators.”
Minister for Trade and Investment, Lord Digby Jones, said:
“We need one voice to sell and promote our capabilities effectively around the world. Our expertise in traditional energy sectors is already well established with impressive levels of export and a highly regarded investment market, which the country has worked hard to achieve.
“But to build this position we need to keep up our momentum. By joining forces with business leaders such as Samir Brikho we will be able to develop our world leading position and truly harness the global opportunities that are emerging for the UK.”
Samir Brikho, Chief Executive of AMEC and Chair of the UK Energy Marketing Strategy Implementation Board, said:
“I am delighted to have been invited to Chair this important Board, which will bring together some of the brightest talent and deepest expertise from the UK energy sector. The industry has strong foundations upon which to build. However, as the international environment becomes more competitive, it is vital that we take this partnership approach to ensure we continue to drive success on the global stage.”
As part of the strategy, the board will aim to develop and promote UK expertise in a range of energy technologies, including biomass, fuel cells, geothermal sources, hydroelectric, hydrocarbon fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas), nuclear power, solar, tide, wave and wind. In particular, it will seek to capitalise on the UK’s strong research base and world leading academic institutions to deliver technological innovation and bring new ideas to market more quickly.
Other elements include:
Creation of a prototype online database mapping tool of expertise across the whole energy field - matching areas of expertise against available opportunities.
Development of the UK energy brand by identifying and prioritising key global opportunities, so that UK and UK businesses continue to be world leaders in sustainable energy technology.
