Saskatoon, SK, Canada (3 March 2008) - AMEC plc, the international engineering and project management company, has been awarded a new contract with PotashCorp at Rocanville Potash mine in Saskatchewan, Canada.
The four-year contract for the provision of engineering and project management services will see a US$1.8 billion expansion of the mine, enabling the production of an additional two million tonnes of potash per year. This will be achieved through the engineering and project management for a new mill as well as expansion of the site’s utilities, storage and loadout facilities.
“We are pleased to have again been chosen to help PotashCorp, the world’s largest potash provider,” said Bob Stanlake, President of AMEC’s Natural Resources Mining and Metals business. “Our commitment to PotashCorp began 40 years ago and our selection shows their trust in our expertise to execute this project and further enhance their lowest cost potash production facility.”
Neil Bruce, Chief Operating Officer of AMEC’s Natural Resources business, said: “The award is evidence of our strong relationships with key customers around the world. It enhances our growth and development in the mining sector, where we are seeing strong long-term growth, and in which we have a diverse and international portfolio of projects.”
This increasing demand for potash, which is used in fertilizer, is being driven primarily by the rising global population and protein-rich diets. With large low-cost potash operations, plans to significantly expand capacity and strategic global investments, PotashCorp has an unmatched ability to meet the needs of both North American and growing offshore markets.
