New Agreement between Eni and the Municipality of Taranto, AMAT and AMIU

Taranto is to implement the circular economy and trial a new fuel for its public transport that promises to reduce the harmful emissions of road traffic.

An agreement to trial Enidiesel+ in a number of local transport network buses managed by AMAT and in the waste collection vehicles made available by AMIU was signed today by the Mayor of Taranto Rinaldo Melucci, Chairman of AMAT (Taranto Transport Company) Giorgia Gira, Chairman of AMIU (Taranto Multiservice and Urban Hygiene Company) Carloalberto Giusti, and Giuseppe Ricci, Chief Refining & Marketing Officer at Eni.

“This year, we plan to embark on a major reform of our public companies in order to provide our citizens with services that meet the highest national standards,” explains Mayor of Taranto Rinaldo Melucci. “This initiative is a major step in this direction and is further proof of how effective collaboration between our community and the biggest businesses in the area can generate development and sustainability opportunities.”

For six months, from 1 March to 30 August, traditional diesel will be replaced, at no additional cost for the Municipality and the two local public companies, by the new fuel whose renewable component is produced by Eni thanks to a proprietary patent that makes it possible to transform conventional refineries into bio-refineries, that is, refineries that are able to turn organic raw materials, including used vegetable oil and animal fat, into high-quality biofuels.

The agreement also involves initiatives to encourage and increase the collection of used cooking oil which the citizens of Taranto can consign to the AMIU separate waste collection service for its subsequent transformation into biofuel at the Eni biorefinery in Venice, at Porto Marghera, and soon also in Gela. Special bins for the collection of used cooking oil will soon also be available in Taranto Refinery and all workers will be given a tank and special instructions for the disposal of cooking oil.

“Eni was the first company in the world to turn a traditional refinery into a bio-refinery to produce high-quality biofuels like the innovative Enidiesel+ using a technology that we developed internally,” explains Giuseppe Ricci, Chief Refining & Marketing Officer at Eni, “and today our goal is to progressively reduce, and eventually eliminate, the use of edible raw materials, complying with European and national regulations on biofuels while investing heavily in research into “advanced” alternative raw materials, materials to which Eni is devoting a great deal of research investment.

This agreement with the Municipality of Taranto and its public companies, a city that is home to one of our biggest refineries, confirms our commitment to the development of the sustainable economy and underlines the important role that a waste raw material such as cooking oil, plays in the production of Enidiesel+.”

The deal signed in Taranto today expands on the existing thriving virtuous circle Eni has established with multi-utility companies in Turin, Venice, Rome and Emilia Romagna where test results have already demonstrated major benefits in terms of air quality, the economy and industry. Compared to conventional diesel, Enidiesel+ features a renewable component that reduces polluting emissions by up to 40%, consumption by about 4% and engine maintenance costs.

These same parameters used to measure the impact of using biofuel will be jointly monitored on AMAT and AMIU transport vehicles that use Eni diesel+ together with the Institute for Research on Engines of the National Research Council of Italy.
