Eco-Friendliness for Autonomous Cars

Hyundai Mobis (KRX:012330), the seventh-largest automotive supplier in the world, is highlighting the technologies it is developing to make the car of the future safer, more user-friendly and greener as the industry races towards autonomous and electrified vehicles at CES 2018.

“We realize that the definition of mobility is rapidly changing. Hyundai Mobis puts user experience at the center of our definition of new mobility. Our aspiration is to support and enable an excellent experience by providing a people-centered, environmentally friendly platform for the era of autonomous driving.”

“The technologies featured at CES 2018 are the result of years of research and development in the areas of autonomous driving, eco-friendliness, infotainment and human-machine interfacing,”

said Youngsuk Ko, vice president, R&D Strategy and Planning at Hyundai Mobis.

“We realize that the definition of mobility is rapidly changing. Hyundai Mobis puts user experience at the center of our definition of new mobility. Our aspiration is to support and enable an excellent experience by providing a people-centered, environmentally friendly platform for the era of autonomous driving.”

At the heart of Hyundai Mobis’s environmentally friendly offerings is the e-Corner Module, the first-ever integrated, modular platform of its kind, specifically designed for electric and other eco-friendly vehicles. The module incorporates a motor, e-Damper, Brake by Wire, and Steer by Wire technologies in a compact package that can be installed in each wheel, doing away with the need for a traditional chassis and central engine, and giving electric or fuel cell vehicles four-wheel drive capabilities. This allows OEMs more freedom in car design, including ample space for battery or hydrogen storage, as well as improvements in ride quality and stability and energy efficiency. Hyundai Mobis aims to complete development of the e-Corner Module by 2021.

Keeping in mind the rapid progress towards autonomous mobility, Hyundai Mobis has developed several smart systems that look to automate the process of parking. Remote Smart Parking Assist builds upon existing park-assist technology by using ultrasound to enable the car to park itself in an adjacent space with the simple touch of a button after occupants disembark. This technology is scheduled to enter mass production in 2018. Automatic Valet Parking takes park-assist technology to the next level: it enables the vehicle to park itself in a remote space (such as in a nearby parking structure or lot) with no input from a driver or occupant.

The fully automated process relies on advanced autonomous sensor technology such as ultrasound, cameras and LiDAR, as well as high-precision maps and localized communication with the parking infrastructure, meaning that occupants do not even have to be in the vehicle for the car to park itself. Hyundai Mobis aims to complete the development of Automatic Valet Parking by the end of this year.

Hyundai Mobis has invested approximately seven percent of its annual parts revenue into its research and development efforts over the past three years, with plans to increase this investment to about 10 percent of expected revenue by 2021. Approximately half of that amount goes into advanced research and development, with heavy emphasis on autonomous sensors, biometrics and information and communications technology.
